Discovering Incense Sticks and their Uses

Always related to religious practices, we are here to tell you that incense is also related to personal relaxation and decoration of spaces.

Let us begin with the origin of the word, derived from Latin “incendere” which means “to light”, incense was also called lebonah by the Hebrews, olibanum by the Romans or luban by the Arabs.

It is an aromatic vegetable resin preparation that usually has essential oils of different origin too in order to give off a fragrant smoke. Depending on the country the preparation will have other elements, such as wood.

According to scientific researches, the incense is obtained from different species of Boswellia, a tree that grows in the Horn of Africa and the Arabic Peninsula.

The use of incense started in Egypt, where it says that the first incense trees were sown, and also that the Phoenician sailors carried logs of this wood in their boats to sell them in other ports. In the Imperial Rome it was used as a deathly offering. We suppose that its use was so popular in those eras that there are references in the Greco-Roman mythology and in the Bible.

Incenses have been used over the centuries for ritualistic or religious purposes, for example in China they lit them on special holidays to honor some deity, or in Japan where they even have a ceremony called Kōdō dedicated exclusively to this aromatic preparation; as well as in Buddhism. Even though in the Eastern world it keeps such purposes, in the West we have adapted it to other uses, like aesthetic or therapeutic, currently having a wide acceptance.

Incense presentation varies according to the culture, since there are preferences based on each country traditions.

First we have the direct burning incense, which come in the form of spiral, very common in China, also in the form of a cone, to repel mosquitoes, or solid sticks that are cut into pieces which are used a lot in Japan.

On the other hand we have non-combustible incenses or indirect burning incenses that usually come pulverized, like a paste or as a whole, to burn on coal.

Generally, most of the incenses marketed in Latin America come from China o India, but now we have a local Brand thanks to BIPA. Our incenses come in a variety of fragrances inspired in nature, which will perfume your home spaces adding a nice touch to your decoration, and will also create the ideal atmosphere for meditation time whether you practice it at home or at the yoga studio.
